Based on the theory that all organisms are linked via descent to a common ancestor, evolution is the unifying theme for all biological research. By exploring concepts of protein evolution, it is possible to study the pattern of relationships among and between protein families to infer the way in which proteins have evolved and diversified over time. In turn, this can lead to revelations in various mechanisms of protein function, such as the identification of protein interaction partners and the residues involved in these interactions.
